50-minute focus block for drawing — vinyl crackle, when you are not sure this will work

A timer, a short prep list, and 50 minutes to fill the page.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Begin with the simple fact that you got here. That already happened. Not being sure it will work is a perfectly good reason to try it once. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.

1 Before you start

  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
  • Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
  • Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
  • Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.

2 While the timer runs

  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.

3 When it ends

  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.

4What to put on

vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
