45-minute focus session for portfolio work with a train carriage, if you are tired of apps

45 minutes on portfolio work — the last ten percent. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Notice where your body touches the chair. That contact is doing more for you than it looks. No account, no streak, no notification asking how you feel. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.

1 Before you start

  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
  • Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
  • When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.

3 When it ends

  • Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.

4What to put on

a train carriage — Rhythmic, low, and slightly rumbly. Many people find the motion-and-noise combination easier to work to than silence.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
