45-minute coding session with brown noise and a timer, on a low-energy afternoon

Sit down, press start, and work through the problem for 45 minutes. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Let the floor take your weight through your feet, and stop holding yourself up for a second. Low-energy afternoons are what this was written for. This works better when you don't overthink it.

1 Before you start

  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
  • Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.

2 While the timer runs

  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
  • If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.

3 When it ends

  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.
  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.

4What to put on

brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
