25-minute studying session with a train carriage and a timer, after a difficult conversation
Sit down, press start, and take in the material for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Part of you is still in the last conversation you had. That's fine. It can sit here too. Difficult conversations leave a residue. This is for the residue. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Plan to leave the last two minutes for writing down where to pick up next time.
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
2 While the timer runs
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
3 When it ends
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
4What to put on
a train carriage — Rhythmic, low, and slightly rumbly. Many people find the motion-and-noise combination easier to work to than silence.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
