25-minute language practice session with a washing machine and a timer, when you have been meaning to start

Sit down, press start, and practise out loud for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

If you're tired, you can let that be true. Tired is allowed here. You have been meaning to start. This is the least intimidating way in. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.

1 Before you start

  • Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
  • Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
  • Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.

2 While the timer runs

  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.

3 When it ends

  • Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
  • Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.

4What to put on

a washing machine — Domestic, mechanical, and oddly steadying. The sound of something else being dealt with.
