25-minute focus block for design work — distant thunder, when the weather has kept you inside

A timer, a short prep list, and 25 minutes to make decisions.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Take one breath that is slightly slower than the last one. That is enough to start. Bad weather is a decent excuse to stay in and do this. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.

1 Before you start

  • Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
  • Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
  • Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.

2 While the timer runs

  • When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.

3 When it ends

  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.

4What to put on

distant thunder — Low rumbles with long gaps. Suits people who find sudden noises more distracting than constant ones.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
