25-minute decluttering session with brown noise and a timer, when the house is busy

Sit down, press start, and move things out for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Notice where your body touches the chair. That contact is doing more for you than it looks. It works with other people in the house. You do not need silence. No preamble. We start with the body.

1 Before you start

  • Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
  • If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.

2 While the timer runs

  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
  • If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.

3 When it ends

  • Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
  • Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.

4What to put on

brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
