Tight box breathing for the early months, when you have tried everything else

A barely any hold, for people who dislike holding pattern, counted for you on screen.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in for 4, hold for 1, out for 4, hold for 1. Picture tracing the sides of a square. That is the whole exercise. This assumes you have already tried the obvious things. Simple things first: contact, weight, temperature.

Why it can help

The pattern occupies the part of your mind that would otherwise be rehearsing the worst case.

One round is 10 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 80 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when someone has annoyed you and you need to not react
  • just before you have to say something difficult
  • when the day has been fine but you still feel braced

Tips

  • Try it once with a hand on your ribs so you can feel whether they are moving.
  • If you have a cold or a blocked nose, skip the holds and breathe through your mouth.
  • Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
