Breathing exercise · 4 · 1 · 4 · 1

Tight box breathing — 4 · 1 · 4 · 1 — for a hospital waiting room, when you want to finish something

A barely any hold, for people who dislike holding pattern, counted for you on screen.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

The pattern is a square — 4, 1, 4, 1 — and you trace it with your breath. Wanting to finish something is a better motivation than wanting to relax. Nothing abstract for the next few minutes.

Why it can help

You can do it silently, in a meeting, without anyone knowing. That matters more than it sounds.

One round is 10 seconds. At the default 5 rounds this practice runs 50 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you wake at 3am and the room feels too quiet
  • before you open the email you have been avoiding
  • when you have read the same paragraph three times

Tips

  • Try it lying down with your knees bent if sitting upright feels like effort.
  • The pauses should never feel like a competition. Shorten them if they do.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
