Coherent 5-5 breathing — 5 · 5 — for a break at work, when you want to finish something

5 · 5 breathing: five seconds in, five seconds out — about six breaths a minute.

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Equal breathing: 5 seconds in, 5 seconds out, no holds at all. Wanting to finish something is a better motivation than wanting to relax. Let the physical world hold your attention.

Why it can help

At about six breaths a minute, the changes in heart rate and breathing tend to line up. That alignment is the whole idea.

One round is 10 seconds. At the default 12 rounds this practice runs 120 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • in the car, parked, before you go inside
  • when someone has annoyed you and you need to not react
  • after a long drive, to shake off the alertness

Tips

  • If you have a cold or a blocked nose, skip the holds and breathe through your mouth.
  • Practising when you are calm makes it available when you are not.
  • Because there is no pause, you can keep this going while walking or talking.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
