6-2-6-2 breathing: 6 rounds for a reset, when you are somewhere unfamiliar

Rounds of 6 · 2 · 6 · 2, with the counting done for you.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

A quicker square — 6, 2, 6, 2 — for when you need to be alert rather than calm. It travels well. Hotels, spare rooms, other people’s sofas. The body is the most reliable place to begin.

Why it can help

This one is not about calming down. It is about giving a tired system a clear rhythm to wake up to.

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 96 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • while you are waiting for something to start
  • when your thoughts are moving faster than you are
  • when you are the only person awake in the house

Tips

  • Practising when you are calm makes it available when you are not.
  • If you lose count, start the round again rather than guessing.
  • Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.

Please note

The counts are short but the rhythm is brisk. If you feel dizzy, lightheaded or short of breath, stop and breathe normally. Do not use this pattern while driving. If you have a heart or lung condition, check with a doctor first.
