Slow box breathing for physical discomfort, when you want to finish something

5 · 5 · 5 · 5 breathing: a wider square, once four feels comfortable.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in for 5, hold for 5, out for 5, hold for 5. Picture tracing the sides of a square. That is the whole exercise. Wanting to finish something is a better motivation than wanting to relax. Nothing abstract for the next few minutes.

Why it can help

A square is easy to picture, so your mind has something to hold onto that is not the thing worrying you.

One round is 20 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 120 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you are the only person awake in the house
  • in a hospital corridor, waiting for news
  • in the car, parked, before you go inside

Tips

  • Two minutes done properly beats ten minutes done while checking your phone.
  • Do the last round slightly smaller than the others. It makes stopping easier.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
