How to use Uneven box breathing
Unwind with a 4 · 4 · 6 · 2 rhythm, your personal breathing sanctuary.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6, then hold for 2. Visualize drawing the outline of a square. That's all there is to it. Feeling unmotivated to begin? That's completely normal. Keep it straightforward for now.
Why it can help
This technique is a stealthy way to center yourself, even during a busy day. It's more impactful than you might think.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 4s | 0s |
| Hold | 4s | 4s |
| Exhale | 6s | 8s |
| Hold again | 2s | 14s |
One round is 16 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 96 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- while you're stuck in traffic, waiting for your ride
- when you're trying to focus on a task but your mind keeps wandering
- when you have a short break and need a quick reset
Tips
- The pauses are not about speed; keep them comfortable.
- Take a brief pause between rounds if the pattern feels too intense.
- If you feel lightheaded, it's okay to come out of the hold early.
Please note
If holding your breath causes dizziness or discomfort, just breathe normally instead. Avoid forcing yourself to hold. If you're pregnant or have a health condition like heart disease, high blood pressure, or lung issues, consult a doctor before trying breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try Double-inhale sigh when you are somewhere noisy, 4-6 breath (4 · 6) for the end of the working day or Coherent 5-5 breathing for a noisy room.
