How to use Soft 4-7-8 breathing for heavy days, when you are doing this for the first time

A the hold cut short, the long exhale kept pattern, counted for you on screen.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 4. Then out for 8, slowly, without pushing. If this is your first go, stay with the plainest version of the instructions. We'll stay close to sensations rather than ideas.

Why it can help

The out-breath is where the release happens. The in-breath is just the setup.

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 128 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • before a presentation, in the corridor
  • in the minutes before an appointment you are dreading
  • when your hands are cold and your chest is tight

Tips

  • Try the same pattern at a different time of day and see whether it feels different.
  • Do it before you need it once, so that it is familiar when you do.
  • Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
