How to use Coherent 5-5 breathing for a break at work, when nothing else has worked today

5 · 5 breathing: five seconds in, five seconds out — about six breaths a minute.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Match the length of the out-breath to the in-breath — about 5 seconds each way. Nothing else has worked today. That is not a reason to skip this. Start with what's physical. Everything else can wait.

Why it can help

You are not trying to relax. You are giving your system a slower, even rhythm and letting it respond however it responds.

One round is 10 seconds. At the default 10 rounds this practice runs 100 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you wake at 3am and the room feels too quiet
  • before you open the email you have been avoiding
  • when you have been given bad news and need to keep functioning

Tips

  • Do it with your shoulders still. The movement should be in your ribs and belly.
  • There is no need to breathe deeply. Long and quiet is the aim.
  • Because there is no pause, you can keep this going while walking or talking.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
