How to use 6-2-6-2 breathing for after exercise, when you are short on time

Rounds of 6 · 2 · 6 · 2, with the counting done for you.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

In for 6, hold for 2, out for 6, hold for 2. Keep the pace slightly brisker than resting. Pick this one when you are short on time. Simple things first: contact, weight, temperature.

Why it can help

Faster, even breathing tends to feel more alerting than slow breathing. That is the intent here.

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 12 rounds this practice runs 192 seconds — about 3 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • in the car, parked, before you go inside
  • when you are tired but cannot afford to be
  • when your hands are cold and your chest is tight

Tips

  • There is no need to breathe deeply. Long and quiet is the aim.
  • Do not chase the feeling. If nothing happens, nothing happened.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

The counts are short but the rhythm is brisk. If you feel dizzy, lightheaded or short of breath, stop and breathe normally. Do not use this pattern while driving. If you have a heart or lung condition, check with a doctor first.
