3-5-7 breathing for a cold morning
3 · 5 · 7 breathing: a staircase down: three, five, seven.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in for 3, hold for 5, then let the breath go for 7 counts. Not being in the mood is a normal starting point. Start with what's physical. Everything else can wait.
Why it can help
Long exhales are easy to do quietly, at a desk, in a queue, without anyone noticing.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 3s | 0s |
| Hold | 5s | 3s |
| Exhale | 7s | 8s |
One round is 15 seconds. At the default 12 rounds this practice runs 180 seconds — about 3 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- at the kitchen table, with a cup of tea going cold
- when the afternoon has gone flat
- before you walk into a room full of people
Tips
- Rest for a few seconds between rounds if the pattern feels demanding.
- Stop after a few rounds if you feel dizzy, and breathe normally for a minute.
- Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try 4-7-8 breathing for heavy days, 3-6 breathing exercise for a noisy room or Box breath for a hospital waiting room.
