Breathing exercise · 3 · 3 · 3 · 3

Gentle box breathing for a cold morning, when you want to be left alone

The pattern is 3 · 3 · 3 · 3, which is a smaller square, for when four counts feels long.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

In for 3, hold 3, out for 3, hold 3. The shape stays the same every round. Nothing here asks anything of you socially. Let the physical world hold your attention.

Why it can help

Four sides means four small completions. Each one is a tiny piece of evidence that you can finish something.

One round is 12 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 48 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you have five minutes and no idea where to start
  • in the two minutes after a difficult phone call
  • before a presentation, in the corridor

Tips

  • Two minutes done properly beats ten minutes done while checking your phone.
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor. It helps more than it sounds like it should.
  • A hold should feel like a pause, not like running out of air.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
