Breathing exercise · 4 · 2 · 6
4-2-6 breath (4 · 2 · 6) for a hard week, when you only have a few minutes
The pattern is 4 · 2 · 6, which is a short hold in the middle, a long way out.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 2. Then out for 6, slowly, without pushing. A few minutes is the whole requirement. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.
Why it can help
The ratio matters more than the depth. Shallow but long beats deep and rushed.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 4s | 0s |
| Hold | 2s | 4s |
| Exhale | 6s | 6s |
One round is 12 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 96 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- in the car, parked, before you go inside
- when you wake at 3am and the room feels too quiet
- when the weather has been grey for a week
Tips
- Do it before you need it once, so that it is familiar when you do.
- If your mind wanders to counting the rounds left, that is normal. Come back to the numbers.
- A hold should feel like a pause, not like running out of air.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try Gentle box breath (3 · 3 · 3 · 3) for Friday evening, when you are doing this for the first time, Box breath (4 · 4 · 4 · 4) for deep focus, when the house is busy or Soft 4-7-8 breathing for heated moments, when you cannot concentrate on anything else.
