Gentle box breathing exercise

3 · 3 · 3 · 3 breathing: a compact routine, for when you're crunched for time.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Start with 3 on the inhale, hold for 3, exhale for 3, and hold for 3 again. Keep it going. Choose this when you need a quick reset. Focus on the basics: your heartbeat, the chair you're sitting on, the warmth of your blanket.

Why it can help

The consistent pattern keeps your mind from wandering — perfect for when you're overwhelmed and need to stay grounded.

One round is 12 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 48 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you're caught in a traffic jam and need to stay calm
  • in a crowded office, trying to concentrate
  • when you're waiting in line and feeling impatient

Tips

  • If one part of the breath feels strained, adjust that count to make it easier.
  • Take a brief pause between rounds if the rhythm feels too intense.
  • Remember, holding your breath is optional. You can breathe through if it's more comfortable for you.

Please note

If holding your breath feels off, just breathe normally. If you're pregnant or have health concerns, consult a doctor before holding your breath.
