Coherent 5-5 breathing exercise
This 5-5 breathing pattern is a simple 5 seconds in, 5 seconds out — a steady rhythm of about six breaths a minute.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Inhale for 5, exhale for 5. The pace is consistent, without any pauses. It's a personal practice, not a social one. Start with your body, it's the most immediate place to find peace.
Why it can help
The benefits build over time, often noticeable after just five minutes. It's a gentle way to reset.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 5s | 0s |
| Exhale | 5s | 5s |
One round is 10 seconds. At the default 10 rounds this practice runs 100 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- when you're about to face a challenging conversation
- when you have a spare 5 minutes and need a moment to center yourself
- while you wait in a quiet hospital corridor, hoping for some news
Tips
- Sit up straight. Your lungs will appreciate the space.
- Relax your jaw. It's easy to tense up without realizing it.
- Since there's no pause, you can maintain this rhythm while walking or talking.
Please note
If holding your breath feels off, just breathe slowly and evenly. Avoid pushing through any dizziness. If you're pregnant or have health concerns, consult a doctor before trying breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try 4-6 breathing for a ten-minute window, 2-1-4 breathing — 2 · 1 · 4 — for Sunday evening, when you need something unremarkable or Box breathing for a hospital waiting room.
