Breathing exercise · 4 · 4

Coherent 4-4 breathing — 4 · 4 — for the commute, when you are not sure this will work

4 · 4 breathing: four and four, if five feels like a stretch.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Equal breathing: 4 seconds in, 4 seconds out, no holds at all. Not being sure it will work is a perfectly good reason to try it once. Simple things first: contact, weight, temperature.

Why it can help

Because in and out are the same length, the exercise becomes a rhythm rather than a task.

The pattern, in seconds

One round is 8 seconds. At the default 10 rounds this practice runs 80 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • before you walk into a room full of people
  • when your hands are cold and your chest is tight
  • before a presentation, in the corridor

Tips

  • If you lose count, start the round again rather than guessing.
  • Rest for a few seconds between rounds if the pattern feels demanding.
  • Because there is no pause, you can keep this going while walking or talking.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
