Box breathing exercise for a cold morning — when you are somewhere noisy

Simple counts — 4 · 4 · 4 · 4 — and a circle that keeps time.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4. Picture tracing the sides of a square. That is the whole exercise. Noise is fine. You are not trying to hear anything subtle. Let the physical world hold your attention.

Why it can help

It is a small, closed loop. Small closed loops are comforting when everything else is open-ended.

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 5 rounds this practice runs 80 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • in the two minutes after a difficult phone call
  • as a way to mark the end of the working day
  • at your desk, with the screen turned off for a moment

Tips

  • Do the last round slightly smaller than the others. It makes stopping easier.
  • Do it before you need it once, so that it is familiar when you do.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
