Breathing exercise · 2 · 2 · 2 · 2
Beginner box breathing exercise for the early months — on a day that started badly
Simple counts — 2 · 2 · 2 · 2 — and a circle that keeps time.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Four equal sides: 2 in, 2 held, 2 out, 2 held. Nothing else to remember. A day that started badly does not have to stay that way. Let the physical world hold your attention.
Why it can help
The rhythm is deliberately unremarkable. Unremarkable is easier to keep up when your hands are shaking.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 2s | 0s |
| Hold | 2s | 2s |
| Exhale | 2s | 4s |
| Hold again | 2s | 6s |
One round is 8 seconds. At the default 12 rounds this practice runs 96 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- when you have five minutes and no idea where to start
- when you wake at 3am and the room feels too quiet
- before you open the email you have been avoiding
Tips
- The pauses should never feel like a competition. Shorten them if they do.
- If your mind wanders to counting the rounds left, that is normal. Come back to the numbers.
- Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try Coherent 4-4 breathing for a ten-minute window, if you are tired of apps, Tight box breathing for the early months, when you have tried everything else or Soft 4-7-8 breathing exercise for exam nerves — when you have woken up too early.
