Beginner box breathing exercise for a noisy room — when the house is busy

2 · 2 · 2 · 2 breathing: the easiest version of the square.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in for 2, hold for 2, out for 2, hold for 2. Picture tracing the sides of a square. That is the whole exercise. It works with other people in the house. You do not need silence. The body is the most reliable place to begin.

Why it can help

Four sides means four small completions. Each one is a tiny piece of evidence that you can finish something.

One round is 8 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 32 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • at your desk, with the screen turned off for a moment
  • after a long drive, to shake off the alertness
  • at the kitchen table, with a cup of tea going cold

Tips

  • You can do this with your eyes open. Nothing here requires privacy.
  • Aim for something you could keep up in a waiting room without anyone noticing.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
