Breathing exercise · 2 · 2 · 2 · 2

Beginner box breathing — 2 · 2 · 2 · 2 — for heated moments, when you are on your own

The pattern is 2 · 2 · 2 · 2, which is the easiest version of the square.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in for 2, hold for 2, out for 2, hold for 2. Picture tracing the sides of a square. That is the whole exercise. Being on your own is not required, but it does make this simpler. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.

Why it can help

This is a composure exercise more than a calming one. It gives you something to do while a feeling passes.

One round is 8 seconds. At the default 10 rounds this practice runs 80 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when your hands are cold and your chest is tight
  • when you have read the same paragraph three times
  • in a hospital corridor, waiting for news

Tips

  • If you wear a watch that tracks breathing, ignore it while you do this.
  • A shorter pattern done consistently beats a longer one done once.
  • If holding for the full count feels tight, drop every number by one. The shape matters more than the size.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
