Breathing exercise · 2 · 2 · 2 · 2
Beginner box breathing for anxious moments, when you have been meaning to start
2 · 2 · 2 · 2 breathing: the easiest version of the square.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
In for 2, hold 2, out for 2, hold 2. The shape stays the same every round. You have been meaning to start. This is the least intimidating way in. Stay with what you can actually feel.
Why it can help
You can do it silently, in a meeting, without anyone knowing. That matters more than it sounds.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 2s | 0s |
| Hold | 2s | 2s |
| Exhale | 2s | 4s |
| Hold again | 2s | 6s |
One round is 8 seconds. At the default 5 rounds this practice runs 40 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- when you wake at 3am and the room feels too quiet
- on a train or a bus, with your bag on your lap
- in the car, parked, before you go inside
Tips
- Do it with your shoulders still. The movement should be in your ribs and belly.
- Do it before you need it once, so that it is familiar when you do.
- Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try Quick 2-1-2-1 breath (2 · 1 · 2 · 1) for a long wait, when you want to be left alone, Coherent 6-6 breath (6 · 6) for a hard week, if you are new to this or 4-8 breathing — 4 · 8 — for a hard conversation, when you are cold and want to be warm.
