Breathing exercise · 5 · 2 · 7
5-2-7 breathing for the commute
A 5 · 2 · 7 rhythm — five, a brief hold, then seven out.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in for 5, hold for 2, then let the breath go for 7 counts. Long weeks are cumulative. This is a small subtraction. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.
Why it can help
The long exhale is the working part. A slow out-breath is one of the few direct levers you have on your own arousal level.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 5s | 0s |
| Hold | 2s | 5s |
| Exhale | 7s | 7s |
One round is 14 seconds. At the default 10 rounds this practice runs 140 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- at the kitchen table, with a cup of tea going cold
- before you walk into a room full of people
- when the day has been fine but you still feel braced
Tips
- You can do this with your eyes open. Nothing here requires privacy.
- Keep your jaw loose. People clench it without noticing during holds.
- A hold should feel like a pause, not like running out of air.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try 3-5-7 breathing when the day has been loud, 4-8 breathing: 4 rounds for heated moments or How to use 5-7 breathing.
