4-7-8 breathing exercise for a grey day — when you are not sure this will work

A in for four, hold for seven, out for eight pattern, counted for you on screen.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

In for 4, hold for 7, out for 8. The exhale is longer than the inhale — that is the entire instruction. Not being sure it will work is a perfectly good reason to try it once. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.

Why it can help

If you are feeling revved up, this is one of the fastest honest ways to take the edge off without pretending.

One round is 19 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 114 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you have read the same paragraph three times
  • at the kitchen table, with a cup of tea going cold
  • before you open the email you have been avoiding

Tips

  • Try it lying down with your knees bent if sitting upright feels like effort.
  • Two minutes done properly beats ten minutes done while checking your phone.
  • If holding for the full count feels tight, drop every number by one. The shape matters more than the size.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
