4-2-6 breathing
Elevate your midday energy with 4-2-6 breathing.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 2, and exhale for 6. Perfect for those long, quiet lunch breaks. Let's focus on the rhythm, not the thoughts.
Why it can help
The magic isn't in emptying your lungs, but in the extended time spent with each breath. It's the pause that refreshes.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 4s | 0s |
| Hold | 2s | 4s |
| Exhale | 6s | 6s |
One round is 12 seconds. At the default 10 rounds this practice runs 120 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- when you're nodding off at your desk
- when your mind is racing during a break
- before a meeting, in the office hallway
Tips
- Take a brief pause between rounds if you feel it's too much.
- Feel free to keep your eyes open. This isn't about hiding away.
- If you feel lightheaded, it's okay to end the hold early.
Please note
If the holds make you feel dizzy or uneasy, just breathe evenly. If you have health concerns, consult a doctor before trying breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try How to use Gentle box breathing for coming down after exercise, when you are not sure this will work, Double-inhale sigh exercise or Beginner box breathing: 5 rounds for the commute.
