3-5-7 breathing: 8 rounds for coming down after exercise, before you go back to something hard
A a staircase down: three, five, seven pattern, counted for you on screen.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in through your nose for 3 counts, hold for 5. Then out for 7, slowly, without pushing. Five minutes here is cheaper than an hour of grinding. Simple things first: contact, weight, temperature.
Why it can help
Long exhales give the diaphragm a slow, full range of movement, which is why the shoulders often drop on their own.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 3s | 0s |
| Hold | 5s | 3s |
| Exhale | 7s | 8s |
One round is 15 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 120 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- after an argument, before you decide what to say next
- when you cannot sleep and do not want to get up
- just before you have to say something difficult
Tips
- Notice which part of the breath feels tight, and reduce that count first.
- Aim for something you could keep up in a waiting room without anyone noticing.
- Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
