Breathing exercise · 3 · 5 · 7

3-5-7 breathing — 3 · 5 · 7 — for a grey day, when you want to finish something

3 · 5 · 7 breathing: a staircase down: three, five, seven.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in through your nose for 3 counts, hold for 5. Then out for 7, slowly, without pushing. Wanting to finish something is a better motivation than wanting to relax. Stay with what you can actually feel.

Why it can help

The hold, where there is one, is short. The work is in the length of the release, not the pause.

One round is 15 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 60 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • at your desk, with the screen turned off for a moment
  • after an argument, before you decide what to say next
  • when your thoughts are moving faster than you are

Tips

  • Sit upright. Your lungs work better when you are not folded in half.
  • The pauses should never feel like a competition. Shorten them if they do.
  • Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
