About this practice
Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 10 minutes of softening for appreciation, before an interview. A guided session of about 10 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: appreciation
Appreciation deepens by staying, not by listing. A moment held for two breaths registers differently from a moment catalogued.
It tends to show up as:
- Rushing past small kindnesses
- Not noticing ordinary comforts
- Thank-yous left unsaid
Slowing down for a moment is what turns something pleasant into something that stays with you.
Doing this before an interview
- Do it where you will not be interrupted, even if that is a stairwell
- Have the first sentence of your answer ready afterwards
- Keep it short — there is no time for a long session
Nerves before an interview are normal and not something to eliminate. You need access to what you know, nothing more.
How softening works
Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.
- Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
- Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
- If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00If your legs are crossed, uncross them. Small changes count.
- 0:12Let the exhale do the work. On each one, allow a little more give.
- 0:26Let the breath get a little quieter, as if you were trying not to wake someone sleeping nearby.
- 0:42For the next few minutes, the only job is to notice what's already happening.
- 0:56Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
- 1:09Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
- 1:22Let the whole of your right foot be heavy.
- 1:33Let your throat soften. There's nothing to swallow right now.
- 1:45Notice your heels making contact with the floor or the bed.
- 1:57Notice your hands again. Check whether they've loosened on their own.
- 2:09When the overlooked kindnesses presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
- 2:28Nothing about the ordinary moments worth savoring has to be explained or justified in this room.
- 2:43If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
- 2:57Find the tightest place and simply breathe near it. Warmth does the softening, not effort.
- 3:11I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
- 3:24Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
- 3:37Unclenching is not the same as relaxing. Just stop adding the tension back.
- 3:50A short silence. Let it be empty.
- 4:00Notice any urge to check something. You can wait two more minutes.
- 4:13With every out-breath, soften one place. Shoulders first, then jaw, then the space behind the eyes.
- 4:28No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
- 4:39If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
- 4:51Notice your wrists. They bend a lot in a day.
- 5:03Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
- 5:18Let the pause stretch out.
- 5:27Feel your hips. Wide, heavy, and doing nothing.
- 5:38Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
- 5:49Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
- 5:59Feel your palms. Warm or cool, either is fine.
- 6:10Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
- 6:21Let the quiet do its work.
- 6:31Let your thumbs rest wherever they landed.
- 6:41Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
- 6:52Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
- 7:03There is a part of you that has handled hard moments before. That part is here now, even if it is quiet.
- 7:21You have been carrying the overlooked kindnesses for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
- 7:40Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
- 7:54If the ordinary moments worth savoring is loud right now, make your attention smaller. Just the next breath. Nothing beyond it.
- 8:11You might be planning something. Notice the planning, then come back.
- 8:23If you're replaying a conversation, let it play. It'll finish on its own.
- 8:36Quiet now. The next part will wait for you.
- 8:47We are not forcing anything open. We are letting things unclench by a single degree.
- 9:01Remain here for a few more breaths.
- 9:11Stand up when you're ready. The list hasn't grown while you were here.
- 9:24Take your time opening your eyes. Nothing is waiting urgently.
