About this practice
When low energy shows up before sleep, this 3-minute self-compassion session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: low energy
Low energy is a flat battery, not laziness. Pushing through it further drains reserves and produces worse work, faster.
It tends to show up as:
- Everything feeling like an effort
- Procrastinating on simple tasks
- Tiredness sitting deep in the body
A short practice will not restore the reserve, but it removes some of the tension that is draining it.
Doing this before sleep
- Dim the lights and put the phone out of reach
- Do it in bed if that helps you stay there
- Let yourself fall asleep rather than finishing it
Checking anything afterwards undoes most of it. Let this be the last thing.
How self-compassion works
Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.
- Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
- Ask what you need, not what you deserve
- A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Take one breath that is slightly slower than the last one. That is enough to start.
- 0:15You are allowed to have a hard time without earning it first.
- 0:28Now let your attention move from the room into your body, slowly, the way you'd move through a doorway you know well.
- 0:46Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
- 0:57Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
- 1:10Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
- 1:22Feel the weight of the flat battery feeling somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
- 1:38When the tiredness that sits in the bones presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
- 1:58Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
- 2:13If the effort everything takes has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
- 2:30If you're bored, stay with the boredom for a moment. It's usually thinner than it looks.
- 2:45Notice the tone you are using on yourself. If it would wound a friend, it is not the truth.
- 3:01Come back at your own speed. The room will wait.
