About this practice

A 15-minute self-compassion session for low energy, before a busy day. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 15 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: low energy

Low energy is a flat battery, not laziness. Pushing through it further drains reserves and produces worse work, faster.

It tends to show up as:

  • Everything feeling like an effort
  • Procrastinating on simple tasks
  • Tiredness sitting deep in the body

A short practice will not restore the reserve, but it removes some of the tension that is draining it.

Doing this before a busy day

  • Do it before the first message or notification
  • Aim for steadiness rather than energy
  • Decide the first task afterwards, not during

The point is to begin without already being behind, not to prepare for every possibility.

How self-compassion works

Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.

  • Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
  • Ask what you need, not what you deserve
  • A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00If your legs are crossed, uncross them. Small changes count.
  2. 0:12You are allowed to have a hard time without earning it first.
  3. 0:25Let your body feel heavier than it did a minute ago. Let the chair or the floor take it.
  4. 0:41For the next few minutes, the only job is to notice what's already happening.
  5. 0:55Let your breathing be boring. Boring is good here.
  6. 1:06Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
  7. 1:17Feel the middle of your back, the part that never gets attention.
  8. 1:30Feel your ankles. Let them be loose.
  9. 1:40Feel your belly. Let it be soft instead of held in.
  10. 1:52Now the right shoulder. Let it be a centimetre lower than it was.
  11. 2:05Notice your hands again. Check whether they've loosened on their own.
  12. 2:17Nothing about the effort everything takes has to be explained or justified in this room.
  13. 2:31Let the exhale carry a little of the flat battery feeling with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
  14. 2:50Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
  15. 3:01You do not have to solve the tiredness that sits in the bones in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
  16. 3:21When the effort everything takes arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
  17. 3:40Notice your breathing, without changing it.
  18. 3:50No need to open your eyes yet.
  19. 4:00Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
  20. 4:13Notice your ribs on both sides. Wide, not squeezed.
  21. 4:24Let the pause stretch out.
  22. 4:33Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
  23. 4:47Feel your face. It's probably softer than it was five minutes ago.
  24. 5:00Just the breath, still.
  25. 5:09Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
  26. 5:21Feel the front of your chest. Notice it rise and fall once.
  27. 5:34Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
  28. 5:44Notice that you don't have to start a breath. It arrives by itself.
  29. 5:57Move to your forehead. Let it be smooth instead of gathered.
  30. 6:09A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
  31. 6:20If you're thinking about the next thing on your list, that list will still be there.
  32. 6:35A few seconds more.
  33. 6:44Let the breath get soft, the way it goes when someone is reading beside you.
  34. 6:58Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
  35. 7:10Feel your heart somewhere in there, doing its work without instructions.
  36. 7:22Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
  37. 7:34No rush to move on.
  38. 7:43Notice the moment you realise you've drifted. That moment is the whole skill.
  39. 7:56Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  40. 8:06Put a hand where the feeling is strongest. Warmth and pressure are the oldest kind of reassurance.
  41. 8:21If you're counting the minutes, that's fine. Count them and come back.
  42. 8:34Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
  43. 8:45Whatever you are about to say to yourself, imagine saying it to someone you love. Use those words.
  44. 9:01If you're judging your performance, that's the same habit as judging everything else.
  45. 9:14Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
  46. 9:25The question is not what you deserve. It is what you need, right now, in this moment.
  47. 9:40Notice how quickly your mind labels things: good, bad, boring, nice.
  48. 9:52I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
  49. 10:04Notice the tone you are using on yourself. If it would wound a friend, it is not the truth.
  50. 10:20Notice how you're sitting. Adjust if you need to. Then settle again.
  51. 10:33Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
  52. 10:46I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
  53. 10:59Feel the weight of the flat battery feeling somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
  54. 11:15Notice where the tiredness that sits in the bones lives in your body. Chest, throat, stomach. Rest your attention there without trying to change it.
  55. 11:34Notice if your breathing is faster than you expected. Don't correct it. Just note it.
  56. 11:48If the effort everything takes has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
  57. 12:05Each time your mind hands you the flat battery feeling, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  58. 12:24Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
  59. 12:37If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
  60. 12:50If your mind has wandered, that's not a mistake. Noticing is the practice.
  61. 13:03Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
  62. 13:17Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  63. 13:29Say it once, plainly: this is hard, and I am allowed to find it hard.
  64. 13:43Let your body keep settling.
  65. 13:52Let the quiet end on its own rather than cutting it off.
  66. 14:05Notice your feet on the floor. That's where you start from.
  67. 14:17Keep following the air.
