About this practice

When morning energy shows up on the morning of an interview, this 5-minute softening session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 5 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: morning energy

Morning energy depends on how you come out of sleep and when light hits your eyes, more than on the number of hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Heavy eyelids at the start
  • Struggling out of bed
  • Needing to hit snooze repeatedly

Movement and breathing raise alertness without caffeine, and the effect holds better through the early hours.

Doing this before an interview

  • Do it where you will not be interrupted, even if that is a stairwell
  • Have the first sentence of your answer ready afterwards
  • Keep it short — there is no time for a long session

Nerves before an interview are normal and not something to eliminate. You need access to what you know, nothing more.

How softening works

Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.

  • Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
  • Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
  • If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Quick check: is anything genuinely urgent in this exact minute? Usually the answer is no.
  2. 0:14Unclenching is not the same as relaxing. Just stop adding the tension back.
  3. 0:27Let your body feel heavier than it did a minute ago. Let the chair or the floor take it.
  4. 0:43Bring your attention to the parts of you that are already still.
  5. 0:56Let your ribs widen on the in-breath instead of your shoulders lifting.
  6. 1:09Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
  7. 1:23Let your throat soften. There's nothing to swallow right now.
  8. 1:35Now feel both feet at once. That's a lot of contact with the world.
  9. 1:49Notice the space between your shoulder blades.
  10. 1:59Nothing changes for a moment.
  11. 2:08If a place will not soften, leave it alone and go somewhere that will. It often follows.
  12. 2:23If a song is stuck in your head, let it play in the background.
  13. 2:37Imagine softening the edges of the wish to begin without the scramble. Not erasing it, just letting the sharp parts go a degree softer.
  14. 2:56If the heavy eyelids at the start starts telling you a story, let the story finish without you adding to it.
  15. 3:13Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
  16. 3:24Give the day arriving before you are ready a shape, a colour, a temperature. Turning it into something specific makes it easier to hold.
  17. 3:43Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
  18. 3:56Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  19. 4:08We are not forcing anything open. We are letting things unclench by a single degree.
  20. 4:22Take a moment to notice you did this for yourself. That's not nothing.
  21. 4:35No rush to move on.
