About this practice
A 3-minute grounding session for stress, on the way in. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: stress
Stress is a load that does not come off. Muscle tension accumulates in the shoulders, jaw and gut, and the body stops returning to baseline between demands.
It tends to show up as:
- Shoulders sitting up near the ears
- Short temper over small things
- Waking already tired
Short practices work on the physical part of the load. They do not remove the demands, but they stop the body storing all of them.
Doing this on your commute
- Headphones on, eyes open or closed depending on your comfort
- Keep one part of your attention on your stop
- Do it standing if sitting is not possible — nobody is watching
Commuting time is already dead time. Nothing is being given up.
How grounding works
Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.
- Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
- Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
- Return to solidity whenever attention drifts
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Begin with the simple fact that you got here. That already happened.
- 0:13Nothing here needs to be efficient.
- 0:23You can think about other things. When you notice, come back. That's the whole practice.
- 0:37Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
- 0:48Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
- 1:02Notice the weight of your thighs, all the way down.
- 1:14Give the tension of too much on the plate a shape, a colour, a temperature. Turning it into something specific makes it easier to hold.
- 1:33You are allowed to be unimpressed by the low-grade alarm of being stretched thin. Indifference is a legitimate response.
- 1:49Notice the small pause before your body decides to breathe in again.
- 2:02Imagine the load you are carrying as a room you can walk out of for a minute. The room will still be there.
- 2:20Notice how quickly your mind labels things: good, bad, boring, nice.
- 2:32We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
- 2:46Come back slowly. There's no prize for finishing fast.
