About this practice
For the times at night when self-doubt takes up more room than you would like — 20 minutes, letting go. A guided session of about 20 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: self-doubt
Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.
It tends to show up as:
- Questioning your ability before starting
- Assuming you are the least capable in the room
- Hesitating to state an opinion
Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.
Doing this at night
- Skip the clock — knowing the time rarely helps at night
- Keep the room dark, and use headphones rather than a speaker
- Expect to be awake for a while without treating that as a problem
Any practice at night works better with the display off. Looking at a screen resets the whole thing.
How letting go works
Letting go is about loosening grip rather than dropping things. It works on the effort attached to a problem — the holding, rehearsing and bracing — which is separable from the problem itself.
- Pick one thing you are gripping and loosen a single finger
- Release the effort with the exhale, not the issue
- Set down temporarily; you can pick it up again after
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Start by hearing the furthest sound you can find.
- 0:11There's no need to try harder than this.
- 0:22We'll be quiet for a bit longer than usual. Stay with whatever shows up.
- 0:36Bring your attention to the parts of you that are already still.
- 0:49Let the breath get soft, the way it goes when someone is reading beside you.
- 1:03Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
- 1:17Feel your heart somewhere in there, doing its work without instructions.
- 1:29Feel your forearms, from the elbow down to the wrist.
- 1:41Notice your wrists. They bend a lot in a day.
- 1:53Feel your upper back against whatever is behind it.
- 2:04Feel your hips. Wide, heavy, and doing nothing.
- 2:15When the fear that you are not enough presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
- 2:35Each time your mind hands you the small voice saying you cannot, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
- 2:55Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
- 3:08Imagine softening the edges of the question mark over your ability. Not erasing it, just letting the sharp parts go a degree softer.
- 3:26Notice how the fear that you are not enough changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
- 3:44Let the breath be shallow if shallow is what your body wants.
- 3:57If you've lost track of where we were, you haven't lost anything important.
- 4:10If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
- 4:23A short silence. Let it be empty.
- 4:33Notice if you've been frowning at your own thoughts.
- 4:44Let this be easy, if easy is available.
- 4:55A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
- 5:06If you're bored, stay with the boredom for a moment. It's usually thinner than it looks.
- 5:21Small efforts are the whole method.
- 5:31A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
- 5:42Notice the moment you realise you've drifted. That moment is the whole skill.
- 5:55Nothing here needs to be efficient.
- 6:05I'll step back. You stay here.
- 6:15If your body wants to move, let it move, then come back.
- 6:28You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
- 6:41Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
- 6:52If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
- 7:04We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
- 7:14I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
- 7:27If you're irritated, that's allowed. Irritation is just weather.
- 7:38Stay here a little longer.
- 7:47Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
- 8:00Notice the weight of your thighs, all the way down.
- 8:12I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
- 8:24Notice if you're being hard on yourself about any of this.
- 8:36Let this one be unhurried.
- 8:45Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
- 9:00Notice your eyebrows. They're probably doing something small right now.
- 9:12Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
- 9:24Notice how quickly your mind labels things: good, bad, boring, nice.
- 9:36Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
- 9:47Keep following the air.
- 9:56If nothing much is happening, that's not a problem. Nothing much is often the point.
- 10:10Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
- 10:22Feel the skin around your eyes. Let the muscles behind them go loose.
- 10:35Feel the pause at the top of the in-breath. It's shorter than you think.
- 10:49Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
- 10:59If your mind is quiet, don't grab at it. Quiet comes and goes too.
- 11:13A few quiet breaths. That's all this is.
- 11:24Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
- 11:36Let your breathing find the rhythm it uses when you're almost asleep.
- 11:49No rush to move on.
- 11:58Notice your pelvis resting on the surface below you.
- 12:09Let your belly rise first, then your chest, then the tops of your lungs.
- 12:23Let your body keep settling.
- 12:32Notice your breathing, without changing it.
- 12:42Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
- 12:56Let the quiet do its work.
- 13:06Now the right shoulder. Let it be a centimetre lower than it was.
- 13:19Notice if your breathing is faster than you expected. Don't correct it. Just note it.
- 13:33A few seconds more.
- 13:42Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
- 13:54Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
- 14:05Nothing changes for a moment.
- 14:14Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
- 14:27Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
- 14:38Let it be this simple.
- 14:47Feel the soles of your feet. All the weight of you goes through them.
- 15:01When the small voice saying you cannot arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
- 15:20No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
- 15:31You are allowed to be unimpressed by the question mark over your ability. Indifference is a legitimate response.
- 15:47Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
- 16:00Give the fear that you are not enough a shape, a colour, a temperature. Turning it into something specific makes it easier to hold.
- 16:19You do not have to like the small voice saying you cannot to breathe through it. Liking was never the requirement.
- 16:36Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
- 16:49Say to yourself: this is uncomfortable, and I can stay with it for one more breath. Then take that breath.
- 17:06There is a part of you that has handled hard moments before. That part is here now, even if it is quiet.
- 17:24Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
- 17:36Notice anything you're holding onto from earlier today.
- 17:47Notice any urge to check something. You can wait two more minutes.
- 18:00Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
- 18:13Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
- 18:24We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
- 18:38Just the breath, still.
- 18:47Let your eyes open when they're ready, not when the words end.
- 19:00Come back to the room through your senses, one at a time.
