About this practice

Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 5 minutes of grounding for perfectionism, on the way in. A guided session of about 5 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: perfectionism

Perfectionism treats a mistake as evidence rather than an incident. The bar rises precisely where self-worth is attached, which is why it never becomes achievable.

It tends to show up as:

  • Endless polishing before sharing
  • Fear of a wrong step
  • Delaying work until conditions are ideal

A practice with no grade attached is a useful counterweight. There is no wrong way to do the next few minutes.

Doing this on your commute

  • Headphones on, eyes open or closed depending on your comfort
  • Keep one part of your attention on your stop
  • Do it standing if sitting is not possible — nobody is watching

Commuting time is already dead time. Nothing is being given up.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Sit however you were already sitting. You don't have to straighten up first.
  2. 0:13Press down slightly and feel the push back. Your body already knows where it is.
  3. 0:27Let your attention rest on the out-breath. The in-breath can take care of itself.
  4. 0:41Everything that happens in the next few minutes is allowed to happen.
  5. 0:54If you're holding your breath at the top, stop. There's no need to hold anything.
  6. 1:08Let the breath get soft, the way it goes when someone is reading beside you.
  7. 1:22Let your thumbs rest wherever they landed.
  8. 1:32Feel the outline of yourself, from the top of your head to your heels.
  9. 1:46Feel your calves, front and back.
  10. 1:56Remain here for a few more breaths.
  11. 2:06If your mind has gone somewhere else, the floor under you has not moved. Start from there.
  12. 2:21If you're judging your performance, that's the same habit as judging everything else.
  13. 2:34Think of the bar that is always too high as a guest that arrived without knocking. You can let it stand in the hallway.
  14. 2:53You do not have to win against the fear of a wrong step. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
  15. 3:11Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  16. 3:25If the demand that everything be exactly right shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
  17. 3:46If you've lost track of where we were, you haven't lost anything important.
  18. 3:59I'll step back. You stay here.
  19. 4:09Come back to the solid things: weight, temperature, surface. They are always available.
  20. 4:22Let the last minute of quiet be the last minute of quiet.
  21. 4:35Take the next breath slowly.
