What this works on: morning energy

Morning energy depends on how you come out of sleep and when light hits your eyes, more than on the number of hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Heavy eyelids at the start
  • Struggling out of bed
  • Needing to hit snooze repeatedly

Movement and breathing raise alertness without caffeine, and the effect holds better through the early hours.

Doing this at night

  • Skip the clock — knowing the time rarely helps at night
  • Keep the room dark, and use headphones rather than a speaker
  • Expect to be awake for a while without treating that as a problem

Any practice at night works better with the display off. Looking at a screen resets the whole thing.

How self-compassion works

Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.

  • Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
  • Ask what you need, not what you deserve
  • A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00You don't have to empty your mind. Nobody has ever managed that, including the people who wrote the instructions.
  2. 0:16You are allowed to have a hard time without earning it first.
  3. 0:29Bring your attention to the parts of you that are already still.
  4. 0:42Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  5. 0:56Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  6. 1:11Let the whole of your left foot be heavy.
  7. 1:22Each time your mind hands you the wish to begin without the scramble, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  8. 1:42Notice the space around the heavy eyelids at the start. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
  9. 2:01Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
  10. 2:13You do not have to like the day arriving before you are ready to breathe through it. Liking was never the requirement.
  11. 2:31Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
  12. 2:43Notice the tone you are using on yourself. If it would wound a friend, it is not the truth.
  13. 2:59Let the quiet end on its own rather than cutting it off.
