About this practice

Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 3 minutes of letting go for low energy, on a lunch break. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: low energy

Low energy is a flat battery, not laziness. Pushing through it further drains reserves and produces worse work, faster.

It tends to show up as:

  • Everything feeling like an effort
  • Procrastinating on simple tasks
  • Tiredness sitting deep in the body

A short practice will not restore the reserve, but it removes some of the tension that is draining it.

Doing this at lunch

  • Do it before eating rather than after, so you are not working against digestion
  • Leaving the desk matters more than the session length
  • Take the headphones off afterwards so the break registers

A break that happens at the same desk is only half a break.

How letting go works

Letting go is about loosening grip rather than dropping things. It works on the effort attached to a problem — the holding, rehearsing and bracing — which is separable from the problem itself.

  • Pick one thing you are gripping and loosen a single finger
  • Release the effort with the exhale, not the issue
  • Set down temporarily; you can pick it up again after

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00If you're tired, you can let that be true. Tired is allowed here.
  2. 0:13You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  3. 0:26Imagine your thoughts as traffic on a road you're standing beside. You don't have to flag any of it down.
  4. 0:43Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
  5. 0:55Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  6. 1:09Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
  7. 1:21Notice the space around the tiredness that sits in the bones. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
  8. 1:40There is a part of you that has handled hard moments before. That part is here now, even if it is quiet.
  9. 1:58Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
  10. 2:11You have been carrying the flat battery feeling for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
  11. 2:31If your mind has wandered, that's not a mistake. Noticing is the practice.
  12. 2:44Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  13. 2:55Take a moment to notice you did this for yourself. That's not nothing.
