About this practice

Slow, spoken guidance for perfectionism. A body scan session you can do before a difficult talk. A guided session of about 5 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: perfectionism

Perfectionism treats a mistake as evidence rather than an incident. The bar rises precisely where self-worth is attached, which is why it never becomes achievable.

It tends to show up as:

  • Endless polishing before sharing
  • Fear of a wrong step
  • Delaying work until conditions are ideal

A practice with no grade attached is a useful counterweight. There is no wrong way to do the next few minutes.

Doing this before a hard conversation

  • Do it before, not during, and again after if it went badly
  • Decide your one non-negotiable sentence beforehand
  • Plan to let the other person speak first

Being settled makes it easier to listen rather than to defend. That is usually what the conversation needs.

How body scan works

A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.

  • Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
  • Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
  • Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Part of you is still in the last conversation you had. That's fine. It can sit here too.
  2. 0:16Move at the speed of your attention, not the speed of a checklist. There is no schedule to keep.
  3. 0:32Notice the weight of your arms without moving them.
  4. 0:43Let your attention drop to the level of your shoulders and stay there a moment.
  5. 0:57If you're holding your breath at the top, stop. There's no need to hold anything.
  6. 1:11Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
  7. 1:24Notice your heels making contact with the floor or the bed.
  8. 1:36Start at the top of your head. Notice the scalp, which you almost never notice.
  9. 1:50Feel your hips. Wide, heavy, and doing nothing.
  10. 2:01Keep following the air.
  11. 2:10If a region feels numb, that is a finding too. Note it and move on.
  12. 2:24Notice the exact moment your attention left. You probably won't catch it. That's normal.
  13. 2:38Let the bar that is always too high be exactly as big as it is, and let your breath be exactly as slow as it is. They can coexist.
  14. 2:59You are allowed to be unimpressed by the fear of a wrong step. Indifference is a legitimate response.
  15. 3:15Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  16. 3:29If the demand that everything be exactly right is loud right now, make your attention smaller. Just the next breath. Nothing beyond it.
  17. 3:47Notice if you've been frowning at your own thoughts.
  18. 3:58Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  19. 4:10Your only job is to notice what is there, region by region, without fixing anything.
  20. 4:24Come back to your body first, and the rest of the day second.
  21. 4:37Let your body keep settling.
