About this practice

When guilt shows up between calls, this 7-minute softening session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: guilt

Guilt replays past choices to try to change them. The replay cannot alter the outcome, so the relief never arrives.

It tends to show up as:

  • Replaying decisions you cannot undo
  • Apologising for things long since settled
  • Feeling you owe something unnamed

This is not a practice for absolution. It is a place to put the weight down for a few minutes, which makes it easier to carry after.

Doing this between meetings

  • Start it in the gap, not after the next one begins
  • Write down the open thread from the last meeting first, then let it go
  • Two minutes done beats five minutes planned

The back-to-back day is exactly why the gap has to be protected rather than used for one more task.

How softening works

Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.

  • Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
  • Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
  • If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Quick check: is anything genuinely urgent in this exact minute? Usually the answer is no.
  2. 0:14Let the exhale do the work. On each one, allow a little more give.
  3. 0:28Let your sense of the room shrink down to just your body and the surface you're on.
  4. 0:43Bring your attention to the parts of you that are already still.
  5. 0:56Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
  6. 1:08Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
  7. 1:22Let the whole of your right foot be heavy.
  8. 1:33Feel your belly. Let it be soft instead of held in.
  9. 1:45Notice the backs of your knees, which you feel more than you think.
  10. 1:58Whatever the replay of past choices is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
  11. 2:13When the self-blame that lingers presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
  12. 2:32Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
  13. 2:45Stay with it.
  14. 2:53Let the breath be shallow if shallow is what your body wants.
  15. 3:06Feel the skin around your eyes. Let the muscles behind them go loose.
  16. 3:19If nothing much is happening, that's not a problem. Nothing much is often the point.
  17. 3:33I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
  18. 3:45If a place will not soften, leave it alone and go somewhere that will. It often follows.
  19. 4:00If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
  20. 4:13Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
  21. 4:26Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
  22. 4:37When the weight of what you should have done arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
  23. 4:57Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the replay of past choices is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
  24. 5:16Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  25. 5:27Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
  26. 5:40If your mind has wandered, that's not a mistake. Noticing is the practice.
  27. 5:53Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  28. 6:03Unclenching is not the same as relaxing. Just stop adding the tension back.
  29. 6:16Give your hands a stretch before you go back to using them.
  30. 6:29Wiggle your fingers and toes, gently, like you're testing that they still work.
