About this practice

When better sleep shows up when you are at your limit, this 5-minute body scan session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 5 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: better sleep

Sleep quality depends on how quickly you descend and how little you surface, not just on total hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Waking unrefreshed after enough hours
  • Broken sleep
  • Taking a long time to drop off

A slower landing shortens the descent and reduces the early-night surface events. Twenty minutes spent well is not a cost to your sleep.

Doing this when you are overwhelmed

  • Do not decide priorities during it
  • Pick the shortest session available here
  • When you finish, write down the first physical action on paper

The pile looks less like a pile once the alarm stops ringing. Sort it after, not during.

How body scan works

A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.

  • Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
  • Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
  • Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Feel your ribs move. That is all the machinery you need to pay attention to right now.
  2. 0:15Start at the crown of the head and move down slowly. Do not skip to the parts that hurt.
  3. 0:31Let your attention rest on the out-breath. The in-breath can take care of itself.
  4. 0:45If some part of you is resisting this, that resistance is worth noticing too.
  5. 0:59Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
  6. 1:10Let your ribs widen on the in-breath instead of your shoulders lifting.
  7. 1:23Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
  8. 1:36Notice the space between your shoulder blades.
  9. 1:46Notice your pelvis resting on the surface below you.
  10. 1:57Let the quiet do its work.
  11. 2:07I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
  12. 2:19Your only job is to notice what is there, region by region, without fixing anything.
  13. 2:33If you're counting the minutes, that's fine. Count them and come back.
  14. 2:46When the sleep that does not arrive easily arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
  15. 3:06Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the worn-out mornings is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
  16. 3:24Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
  17. 3:37You are allowed to be unimpressed by the wish for deeper rest. Indifference is a legitimate response.
  18. 3:52Notice any urge to check something. You can wait two more minutes.
  19. 4:05Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
  20. 4:17Visit each area with plain curiosity, not with a verdict. Sensation is information, not a problem.
  21. 4:32If you're going straight back to work, take ten seconds at the doorway first.
