About this practice
Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 3 minutes of softening for waking at 3am, before work. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: waking at 3am
Waking at 3am is common because sleep cycles and body temperature both shift then. The problem is rarely the waking; it is the thinking that starts immediately after.
It tends to show up as:
- Wide awake with the mind running
- Problems feeling enormous in the dark
- Lying there until the alarm
The aim is to stop the mind from attaching to the first thought, so the second sleep cycle can arrive on its own.
Doing this before a busy day
- Do it before the first message or notification
- Aim for steadiness rather than energy
- Decide the first task afterwards, not during
The point is to begin without already being behind, not to prepare for every possibility.
How softening works
Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.
- Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
- Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
- If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Notice the heaviest part of your body right now. Let it be heavy.
- 0:13Let the exhale do the work. On each one, allow a little more give.
- 0:27For the next few minutes, the only job is to notice what's already happening.
- 0:41Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
- 0:54Feel the pause at the top of the in-breath. It's shorter than you think.
- 1:08Feel your palms. Warm or cool, either is fine.
- 1:19Notice where the thoughts that feel enormous in the dark lives in your body. Chest, throat, stomach. Rest your attention there without trying to change it.
- 1:38Notice how the night that feels endless changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
- 1:55Notice the small pause before your body decides to breathe in again.
- 2:08Imagine the 3am brain running its meeting as a room you can walk out of for a minute. The room will still be there.
- 2:27Notice whether you're breathing or holding. Start breathing again.
- 2:38With every out-breath, soften one place. Shoulders first, then jaw, then the space behind the eyes.
- 2:53If you're going straight back to work, take ten seconds at the doorway first.
