About this practice
When guilt shows up when you wake at 3am, this 3-minute self-compassion session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: guilt
Guilt replays past choices to try to change them. The replay cannot alter the outcome, so the relief never arrives.
It tends to show up as:
- Replaying decisions you cannot undo
- Apologising for things long since settled
- Feeling you owe something unnamed
This is not a practice for absolution. It is a place to put the weight down for a few minutes, which makes it easier to carry after.
Doing this at 3am
- Do not check the time and do not turn on a light
- Stay lying down if you can — sitting up makes it harder to return to sleep
- Do not try to solve anything that arrives at this hour
Problems at 3am feel enormous because of chemistry, not because they are actually bigger. Defer them.
How self-compassion works
Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.
- Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
- Ask what you need, not what you deserve
- A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is.
- 0:14If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
- 0:27Let your body be exactly as tired as it is.
- 0:39Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
- 0:51Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
- 1:02Notice your whole body as one shape, sitting or lying here.
- 1:14You are allowed to be unimpressed by the self-blame that lingers. Indifference is a legitimate response.
- 1:29Notice where the weight of what you should have done lives in your body. Chest, throat, stomach. Rest your attention there without trying to change it.
- 1:48Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
- 2:00You do not have to solve the replay of past choices in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
- 2:19Notice if your attention is in the future. Bring it back to the room.
- 2:33You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
- 2:46Notice whether you feel any different. If not, that's also normal.
