When grief arrives out of nowhere — where to start, if you are tired of apps
Grief does not follow a schedule. The waves come less often over time, but they do not stop, and that is not a failure.
Start here
A short explanation first, because knowing why makes the doing easier.
No account, no streak, no notification asking how you feel.
If you only do one thing from this page, do the first point below. It is first because it removes the most friction for the least effort.
What helps
Tell people what you need specifically. "I would rather not talk about it today" is a complete sentence.
Do not make big decisions in the first months. Grief makes everything feel permanent that is not.
Have a place to go. A room, a walk, a bench. Knowing where you can fall apart makes it easier to hold it together elsewhere.
What to do when it does not work
Waves usually pass in ten to twenty minutes if you do not fight them. Fighting is what makes them last.
If it is still stopping you functioning after a year, that is worth talking to someone about. Prolonged grief is a recognised condition and it responds to treatment.
Anniversaries, songs, and smells will bring it back. Planning for those days in advance is not morbid, it is practical.
Questions people ask
Should I avoid reminders?
Not usually. Avoidance works briefly and then narrows your life. Small, chosen contact with reminders is usually easier than being ambushed by them.
Is it normal to feel nothing?
Yes. Numbness is a common early response, and it does not mean you cared less.
