Focus session for problem solving: 45 minutes, brown noise, if you are fitting this around other people

45 minutes of problem solving, with brown noise and a note on what to do when you drift.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Then find the nearest sound. It's probably your own breathing. It is designed to fit around other people’s schedules. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.

1 Before you start

  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
  • Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
  • Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
  • Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.

2 While the timer runs

  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
  • When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.

3 When it ends

  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
  • Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.

4What to put on

brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
