Focus session for coding: 25 minutes, brown noise, when you want to finish something
25 minutes of coding, with brown noise and a note on what to do when you drift.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Then find the nearest sound. It's probably your own breathing. Wanting to finish something is a better motivation than wanting to relax. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
- Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
4What to put on
brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
