Deep work timer: 90 minutes of coding (plain quiet), when you have woken up too early
One block of coding with plain quiet underneath. One full ultradian cycle, for work that needs a long runway.
90:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Sit however you were already sitting. You don't have to straighten up first. Waking too early is a specific kind of frustrating. This helps with the frustration. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
2 While the timer runs
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
3 When it ends
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
4What to put on
plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.
